How I Became I Photographer | Boulder Photographer

Online photography workshop host and Boulder newborn photographer, Denver newborn photographer, and Boulder family photographer shares her story of becoming a photographer 2 decades ago.

My photography story starts like this …

Once upon a time, in a tiny town in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont (yep, they still have kingdoms there – this one is on the border of New Hampshire and Canada), there lived a fiery little girl with marble blue eyes, a head full of unruly blonde curls, and a passion for living out loud.

When the little girl was just 7 years old, her mother gave her a 35 mm camera and a roll of film for her birthday.

Just 30 minutes later, she went back and asked her mom for another. Staring in disbelief, she asked, “what could you have possibly used an entire roll of film on in under a half hour?”, “Everything important”, she replied (although, not necessarily in focus).

And that’s how my photography journey began.

I carried that little Kodak camera everywhere I went. I would dress my sister in the most ridiculous outfits, convince her to go on long walks in the woods (we lived on 80 acres), and beg her to let me take her photo over and over again.

I later hosted elaborate playdates with my friends, where we staged entire weddings (my best friend adorned in my mother’s wedding dress and my little sister wearing some matador suit (don’t even ask) we found in the attic), decorating the scene with giant bouquets from our garden (again, sorry mom!) and cupcakes we whipped up that morning. #classy

We would capture dozens of images and beg my mom to drive us to local pharmacy to have them printed immediately so we could design the “bride’s” wedding album that afternoon.

Talk about determined.

And that’s just the way I am … still. Just ask my husband. (I once painted the entire living room in just 2 hours only to realize I hated the color — apparently baby blue is for nurseries, not living spaces?! 🤷🏼‍♀️)

My point of sharing this story is, we all have to start somewhere.

Whether you started with a Kodak camera in your backyard as a kid, or went to photography school (which, I actually did 11 years after the Kodak story). Or maybe you’re a “momtographer” that got into the biz after having your little ones.

The point is …

We are all on this journey together. I am here to encourage, support, and guide you toward your goals as I continue on toward mine. Even after nearly 20 years in the photography world, I’m always challenging myself to dream bigger, live louder, to show up and be seen.

Because, let’s face it … no one benefits from playing small. Not you, not me, not our families, not our clients.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be popping into your email to say hello, share some of my best photography tips and business hacks, and to ultimately help you reach those goals on your must-hit list.

So tell me, {{first_name}} … what’s your #1 goal for this year? Comment below and let me know so I can check in with you and help you get there.

Looking forward to hearing from you, friend!

💕 Jenni
