So, I have a little extra energy because we just had our first day back at school! Did I squeal out of the school dropoff line? Maybe! While back to school can be an exciting part of the year knowing you have more time to focus on life and business, it can still seem pretty overwhelming. Whether you have kids or not, I’m sharing some tips and suggestions on what you can do to help ease back into a routine after summer.

The struggle of summer planning

Years ago, I would try to do all the things. Summer was no different from fall, winter, or spring – except that the kids were home. I didn’t do a good job of planning and this happened summer after summer. In fact, there was one summer when my daughter’s best friend’s mom pointed out that I was too busy to schedule camps. She even offered to help. And while I appreciated her calling me out, I still missed the mark!

Here in Colorado, summer camps need to be booked in January, which is insane! I got used to the kids being home and bored every single day. However, I knew that the kids still needed structure and routines.

Finding a routine that works for you

A couple of years ago, I finally got it together! I started booking summer camps in January, picking the options that worked best for us. We also planned some trips, as well as free weeks where I would only work a couple of days a week and spend the rest of the days with the kids. I also decided to take a good chunk of the summer off where I only work 1 hour a day 4 days a week.

Yes, we are all ambitious, but if we’re trying to do all of the things at one time, eventually they will fall flat within a couple of weeks. We need to give ourselves time to process and actually get back into a groove and routine that works for us. Remember – the best routine for you is the one you’re actually going to stick to!

If you do have kids who are going back to school and you’re exhausted, take the time to relax and recharge.

Mapping out your goals

If you’re someone who is sending your kids back to school, take time to relax, reset, and recharge. We can’t pour from an empty cup and you can’t launch everything at once. This doesn’t work for anyone.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed and trying to launch everything at once, take a step back. One of the things that has helped me is mapping out what I want to achieve before the year comes to an end. Here’s how I do it:

Brain dump – List out all of the things you dream of doing and put them in your notes app, or if you have a team, you can put it into Google Docs

Prioritize by excitement – Reorder them based on the things that excite you the most. Excitement is contagious, so if you’re excited about it, your potential clients will be excited too!

Assess the impact – Highlight the things that will move the needle fastest according to your goals.

Plan and execute – Dissect everything that needs to be done to launch. You will want to map out every single thing that will need to happen in order to have a successful launch.

Consistently market – Talk about your offer multiple times. Good marketing is talking about the same thing a hundred times rather than talking about a hundred things once.

Final Thoughts

Coming off of summer break can be really exciting. But then we can go full force and then burn out. That’s the last thing I want for myself and for any of you. Approach your goals strategically, prioritize them by excitement, and plan them thoroughly. I wish you the best of luck transitioning back into our fall and winter routines, and for those who have children going back to school, I hope you have an amazing school year ahead!
