Want to know my favorite way to make money in your sleep? One word: Ads! This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because I’m a total nerd when it comes to ads. Even with a small following, email list, and team, you can still totally achieve this with some smart, low-cost ad strategies.

Why ads are so important

For business owners, getting our offers in front of our target audience can feel daunting. You may feel like you have to show up on social media 24/7, shake your ass, and talk about your offers constantly, but who wants to spend ALL of their time doing that? Another way could be constantly spamming your email list, but that would just be annoying.

I have chosen to do low-cost Instagram and Facebook ads that have helped me consistently market my offers and services, and it’s something I’ve been doing for years. After getting burned by multiple ad agencies, I decided to get scrappy and learn everything I could about ads on my own. Now, I’m pulling back the curtain and sharing some of my favorite types of ads to run.

The 5 types of ads I use regularly

Lead Conversion Ads

The first type of ad I run is a lead conversion ad, which is essentially a free offer designed to collect your ideal client’s information. These could be a PDF, a workbook, a template, or even a mini-podcast episode. And this is all in exchange for their contact information.

When setting these up, you want to be mindful of who your target audience is. For example, if you’re a wedding photographer targeting women aged 26-46 in the U.S. who are interested in Photoshop, Lightroom, Canon, Nikon, etc., you would tailor your ad to reach them specifically. Then, you can create a series of 3-4 graphics and then AB test them against each other. You’ll run your ads for 5 days, and in turn, you’ll start growing your email list.

Sales Conversion Ads

These ads are designed to sell something, like a course or digital product. So, just like the lead ad, you’ll find an audience that works for you and AB test your ad sets to see what works best. Be sure to have these ads link back to your sales page.

Traffic Conversion Ads

The purpose of these is to drive traffic to a website. I actually use these for my own podcast and direct traffic to episodes I feel are going to perform really well. They are extremely inexpensive, sometimes less than a penny per click, and can result in high conversion rates.

Awareness Ads

The point of these ads is to constantly get in the face of your ideal user. Once they click on something of yours, we’re going to keep showing them new things. And it doesn’t always have to be business-related. Sometimes I’ll run awareness ads of just a family photo of us playing on the beach. This type of ad helps you create connections and grow your social media following.

Engagement Ads

The last type of ad I use is an engagement ad. They are all about getting people to engage with you, your offers, and your brand. My primary way of using engagement ads is a DM-style ad. People message me a specific keyword to get a free offer or discount and can create an opportunity for conversations and building relationships.

Ads don’t need to be expensive

The bottom line is this: Ads don’t need to cost you a bazillion dollars for ads to be effective. Last year, we spent just over $200K on ads and we brought in $1.32 million, so the profit margin is extremely high. If you are spending tons of money on ads and not seeing any ROI, send me a DM at @jennnimaroney and let’s chat. I’ve helped many women make 6 figures using ads, and I would love to help you too!
