While self-care is a topic I’ve shied away from in the past, I do know it’s important to talk about. To be honest, I’ve never thought of myself as someone who has a self-care routine until I had a conversation with a friend who made me realize that I actually do have one! I’ve found some non-negotiables that have helped my mindset, mood, and overall well-being. They have helped me become a better mom, better wife, better business owner, and even a better property management owner.

Exercise and movement

Exercise is super important to me. After having a knee injury from running a 10K, I had to take a month off and it was really hard. Once my doctor approved me to start exercising again, I struggled to get back into it. I was feeling lazy and noticed my mood and body had changed. I knew I had to get back into it.

To hold myself accountable, I decided to schedule workouts into my calendar and treat them like doctor’s appointments. I’ve been doing it for about a week and I’m feeling SO much better! I try to do a 30-minute Peleton ride once a day and pilates twice a week, which has helped me become more focused and less snippy. I just feel better overall.

Hydration

I’ve noticed that living at such high altitudes has made me super thirsty all the time! I tried those sugary electrolyte drinks, but they weren’t helping, so I switched to a low-sugar electrolyte powder. It’s made a huge difference. I make sure to drink a giant cup of electrolyte water first thing in the morning, which helps me go into the day feeling more hydrated than I ever have.

Talking with friends

I try to connect with a friend or my sister at least once a day, even if it’s just by text. It makes me feel good to talk and get a good laugh, which really helps my mood. Trying to schedule something like that once a day gives me that daily dose of endorphins I need.

Looking good and feeling good

I grew up super simple. I never wore makeup or did my hair, and I shopped at thrift stores. After having kids, I felt like I was losing myself, so I started doing things for me to make myself feel better. This includes scheduling monthly nail appointments and getting hair extensions. I know it may sound superficial, but looking good helps me feel good.

Traveling on my own

Something I’ve started to do very recently is going away by myself or with a family member at least once a month. I love staying in a hotel and traveling by myself because I come back feeling refreshed. It helps me show up better too for my kids. I want them to see a mom who is comfortable traveling on her own and I want them to know that alone time is really important and healthy.

Quality time with my husband

While this isn’t necessarily self-care, my husband and I do a date night once a week. We also do at least one trip just the two of us every year. My husband and I will completely disconnect and just spend time together. It helps us reconnect and has been amazing for our marriage.

Final Thoughts

Having a self-care routine is going to look different for everyone. Whether it’s exercising, staying hydrated, getting your nails done, or connecting with loved ones, find something that helps you stay refreshed. And if you have your own self-care routine, let me know on Instagram @jennimaroney. I’d love to hear about it!
